Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant waterproofing: 660,000 m² of TECHNONICOL membranes
When a structure is designed to operate for decades, the materials hidden inside it matter as much as the ones you can see. At the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant in Tamil Nadu, one of the largest nuclear power projects in India, TECHNONICOL supplied about 660,000 m² of foundation and roof waterproofing membranes: TECHNOELAST MOST B SBS-modified bitumen membranes and LOGICBASE V-SL PVC waterproofing membranes.
Why waterproofing matters in nuclear power plant construction
A nuclear power plant is not an ordinary building. Its structures are massive, its operating life is measured in decades, and access for repair is limited once the plant is running. Water ingress through a foundation or a roof is not just a maintenance problem. It can affect the durability of concrete and the reliability of the whole structure.
That is why nuclear power plant waterproofing in India is chosen on the basis of proven quality, strict compliance with technical requirements and predictable long-term performance. This is the standard of waterproofing for critical infrastructure.
Kudankulam project at a glance
Object: Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant, Tamil Nadu, India
Scope: foundation and roof waterproofing
Materials: TECHNOELAST MOST B (620,000 m²) and LOGICBASE V-SL (40,000 m²)
TECHNOELAST MOST B: SBS-modified bitumen membrane for torch-on application
TECHNOELAST MOST B is made by applying a high-quality polymer-bitumen binder to both sides of a polyester base. It was developed for demanding conditions such as bridge decks, and it can also be used as single-layer foundation waterproofing.
Key advantages:
- High puncture resistance and resistance to foot marking
- High-quality polyester reinforcement
- Extra durability thanks to a special binder formula and increased thickness
- Torch-on installation, with a bottom film whose graphic elements melt to show that the material has been properly heated
This reserve of heat resistance and flexibility matters for polymer-bitumen membranes in India, where roof and foundation structures face high temperatures and heavy rain.
LOGICBASE V-SL: PVC waterproofing membrane with a signal layer
LOGICBASE V-SL is a non-reinforced PVC waterproofing membrane made by co-extrusion from premium plasticized PVC. It is used for tunnels, foundations and underground parts of structures, and joints are made by hot-air welding.
Its most practical feature is the yellow signal layer on the top surface. If the membrane is damaged during installation or later work, the colour makes the damage easy to detect and repair before it is covered up.
Beyond the signal layer, LOGICBASE V-SL is built for the realities of a large construction site. The membrane combines durability, high strength and elasticity with resistance to mechanical impact and high chemical stability, so it can withstand the loads of installation, reinforcement work and concrete placing.
For owners and engineers, this means a continuous, verifiable waterproofing layer, where any damage can be seen and repaired before the structure is closed up.
What this project shows
Scale. Supplying 660,000 m² of membranes requires stable production, planned logistics and technical coordination over a long construction period. It confirms TECHNONICOL’s ability to deliver large-scale waterproofing projects in India, not only standard orders.
A system approach. The combination of bitumen and PVC membranes reflects an important engineering principle: each part of a structure gets the material best suited to its conditions.
Quality that can be checked. Membranes are tested before they reach the site, and production and laboratories follow strict quality control. Read more on the Research & Development and Production Improvement pages.
Experience across India’s infrastructure
Kudankulam joins other TECHNONICOL infrastructure projects in India, including the nuclear power project in Gorakhpur, Haryana, and several tunnels in Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Arunachal Pradesh. See them all in the infrastructure projects gallery.
